Gr 5-9-- As the credits begin to roll, so do the descriptions in this informative guide to making movies. Why people make movies, how films move, how special effects are achieved, and how the finished product is distributed are all discussed in this readable, chock-full-of-facts book. Although not as historical as Thurman's Magic Lantern: How Movies Got To Move (Atheneum, 1978; o.p.) or as fast paced as Clise's Special Effects (Viking, 1987), this text does give a thorough look at the art of movie making, or, as Schwartz says, ``making ideas visible.'' The black-and-white and color photographs are timely and interesting, although lacking in their portrayals of women and minorities. The book should be a welcome addition to most collections, along with Powers' Movie Monsters and Horror Movies (both Lerner, 1989). --Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, RIBook Details
