Children's Literature

Mother will nurse you wherever you are, according to the theme of this story. Mother may be a human, a horse, or even an elephant, but she will always take care of her baby. With beautiful, mostly pastel illustrations, the book is calming both in its appearance and its message to children. Although the Spanish version does not always directly translate to the English version due to an attempt to keep a rhyming scheme in both languages, the overall sentiment remains clear. The illustrations also name the animals in both English and Spanish, making it a useful tool in teaching animal vocabulary. However, the choice of animals, such as a platypus, may be too complicated for very young children still learning basics. An extra page at the end gives supplemental facts about animals and their babies, which may interest older children. This is a great book for children who have already had some exposure to the Spanish language. Reviewer: Marisa Binder
