In this lullabyesque tale from the team behind I Love You Because You're You, a kangaroo mother comforts her daughter throughout all her new experiences, such as going to school and running in a race. McPhail's illustrations-the two kangaroos splashing in the rain, the little kangaroo learning how to share a red ball with friends-are just as soothing as Baker's text ("Mama's right here/ And I always will be"). The sweet affection shared between mama and child is sure to make it a favorite. Ages 2-5. (Apr.)

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

The message is simple: Mothers are there for their young, and their love and support are constant. Baker tells the story of this love and care from the time her little one wakes up until the time she turns in for the night. Mama takes her daughter to school for the first day and is there to welcome her home. Mama plays with her and helps build a sled to use in the snow. (Somehow, kangaroos and snow do not seem to go together—maybe a surfboard would have been a better choice). Mama reads a book and tucks her little one in for the night. McPhail's characteristic soft pen and ink/watercolor illustrations convey the warm and loving tone of the text. He also fills his illustrations with plenty of details, which offer a lot for parents and children to discuss. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
