School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-These titles acquaint children with the surroundings and the variety of plants and animals that live in aquatic habitats. The large, open format is appealing, as are the high-quality, color photographs and illustrations with captions that provide additional interesting facts. Scientific words that may be unfamiliar to young readers are in bold type and are sometimes defined in the text (a few with pronunciation guides), as well as in a glossary (with no pronunciation guides). The books are well organized into short chapters with bold headings, each page consisting of half text and half illustration along with liberal "Did You Know?" boxes. While the importance of the environments and things children can do to preserve them are dealt with, the volumes fail to address the conservation issues of each habitat. Still, the books may be useful for reports.-Michele Capozzella, Chappaqua Public Library, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
