As one volume of Chelsea House's "Life in America 100 Years Ago" series, Manners and Customs centers on five general areas of everyday life in the United States around 1900. Work and leisure, clothing and fashion, courtship and marriage, learning and education, and politics are each examined at a level that should prove useful for upper elementary aged children seeking information for reports or projects. However, the writing style, one that is basically a series of slightly fleshed out factual statements, probably won't appeal to anyone reading for pleasure. There is an abundance of very nice photographs and illustrations, but these, as well as the text, focus almost entirely on the upper middle class of the time, with very little mention of other levels of American society. The inclusion of politics in the Manners and Customs volume of the set rather than in the forthcoming Government and Politics volume is curious, but does not detract from the usefulness or interest of this book.Book Details
