From The Critics

Reviewer: Monica M. Joyce, MSN, RN(Yale New Haven Hospital)
Description: This book provides a thorough and realistic approach to the "24-hour-a-day" look at pediatric emergency nursing care. The manual style offers the reader easy access to answers to common problems and appropriate guidance in researching a child's complaints.
Purpose: It is intended to act as a broad spectrum manual that will provide the nursing practitioner with a solid foundation of pediatric assessments and management within the emergency care setting. The carefully selected content of developmental applications and emergent conditions advocates promoting and providing holistic care to children in the emergency department.
Audience: The audience that would benefit from this text is extensive. It is guaranteed to stimulate the learning curve for all who take care of children. Pediatric health care providers from the outpatient urgent care areas to the critical care departments/emergency departments will gain greater insight into a more comprehensive and thoughtful history as well as be able to perform a more complete assessment following exposure to this wonderful resource.
Features: This book has superb illustrations that nicely blend practicality with intrigue (i.e., integument photos, musculoskeletal diagrams of fractures). The user-friendly graphs and charts have a great potential to stimulate learning and clarify misconceptions of each organ system. The layout at the beginning of each chapter, using tables and boxes, is conducive to the reader's expectations of available subject materials. However, there is significant opportunity for this to be a brighter and more colorful text that would highlight more pertinent information for the reader.
Assessment: This book has successfully combined a holistic pediatric core text with that of emergency nursing care. The authors need to be applauded for the skill and consideration shown in selecting the content. Although color is lacking in most illustrations, the overall attractiveness comes from the use of state-of-the-art graphics and photography. I would highly recommend the purchase of this manual for further learning for all pediatric practitioners.
