Maoism, because of the backing of China, was the most significant schism in the International Communist movement. In this companion volume to his earlier work looking at Maoism in the developing world, Alexander (economics, Rutgers U.) presents a survey of the significant Maoist groups in 22 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. Identifying three major strands of International Maoism (those that supported the Gang of Four, those who followed the Albanian break with China, and those who remained loyal to the ruling groups of China, offers brief descriptions and histories of various contending Maoist groups. Two major sources form the basis for the work: the Hoover Institution's and documents of the Communist Party of the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Annotation c.
