School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Beginning with pre-history, this book traces the development of Maori adaptation to life in New Zealand, the decline of their lifestyle following the arrival of British settlers, and their struggle to regain and retain their cultural identity. Every page contains at least one large illustration (full-color photographs, maps, reproductions), and insets provide additional information that is frequently more interesting than the main text. The maps are sketchy; no cities or physical features on the South Island are indicated, which may lead readers to assume that no people live there. Although the basics of Maori pronunciation are briefly explained, guidance is offered for only a few place and people names. A serviceable, albeit brief, introduction that will supplement existing titles on New Zealand.-Jeanette Larson, Texas State Library, Austin
