School Library Journal

Gr 7-10-Utilizing strategies that are still taught at military colleges today, the Greeks fought to preserve their freedom at Marathon in 490 B.C.E. Califf's study is divided into nine chapters that feature background information on the Greeks and Persians, the soldiers, the leaders, consequences, and the significance of the battle in art and literature. Similarly, Crompton's work outlines how William the Conqueror and the Normans defeated King Harold's Anglo-Saxons, a pivotal event in English history. Ten sections highlight the numerous protagonists, the Bayeux Tapestry, and the lasting legacy of the fight. Both titles include maps, a good selection of black-and-white and color photos, and lists for further reading that suggest adult books, many of which are out of print.-L. R.
