Stephen D. Glazier's Marchin' the Pilgrims Home offers an ethnographic analysis of the beliefs and practices of the Spiritual Baptists on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. Variously known as Shouters, Shakers, and Shango Baptists, the Spiritual Baptist Church currently has about ten thousand members on the island. Glazier describes the group's myths and systems of belief as well as its prominent symbols and rituals. He also analyzes the religion in light of social, economic, political, and geographic conditions, with special attention to leadership decisions. Marchin' the Pilgrims Home is critically important to the anthropological literature. It is the most sophisticated analysis of a Caribbean religion to be published in many years and challenges many previously accepted theories in the anthropology of religion.
