School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-These titles present people from very different areas of achievement, each demonstrating qualities for young readers to admire and emulate. The books are thoughtful in documenting the extreme pressures of segregation and prejudice but emphasize the positive efforts and successes of each person. The clear, easy-to-read texts treat the highlights of each life and present enough personal information to humanize these superachievers. The attractive volumes have large, open formats and plenty of white space. Captioned photographs of the subjects, formal and informal, action and still, presented as snapshots, along with other historical pictures, add much to the texts. These books are perfect for reports or as introductions to their subjects and will engage young readers.-Marlene Gawron, Orange County Library, Orlando, FL Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
