ea. vol: 48p. diags. illus. photos. reprods. bibliog. chron. glossary. index. (Pioneers of Science Series). CIP. Bookwright Pr, dist. by Watts . 1991. PLB $12.40. Gr 3-5-- Thoughtful biographies for this age group are hard to come by, and these British imports fill the bill. Their well-designed format includes illustrations of life as Bell or Curie would have known it, as well as black-and-white and full-color photographs of their families and friends. Dunn also presents background information on how their discoveries came to be and details their importance, making these titles valuable additions to applied-science and technology collections as well as biography sections. The texts are not oversimplified or excessively complex, but offer curious students enough information for reports and serve as introductions to the further study of atoms or sound waves. While these are not of prize-winning literary quality, they are attractive and solid books that will get years of use. --Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, HoustonBook Details
