Gr 4-7-This biography of the civil rights activist tells of a strong woman who overcame great obstacles throughout her life in order to meet her goals. Although her father was the son of a white master, he was not able to gain his freedom until after the Emancipation Proclamation. He then was able to build his own business and to provide well for his children. Mary was determined to earn a degree, which she did at Oberlin College. This is just the beginning of the story of an amazing woman who at age 86 led a successful battle to integrate the restaurants of Washington, DC. With its open format and interesting accounts of events in Terrell's life, this well-documented biography will satisfy general readers as well as students writing reports. Good-quality, black-and-white photographs appear throughout.-Dorothy N. Bowen, Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
