"As with all the Orca Soundings books, this novel succeeds on many levels. The pace is breakneck...taking numerous twists and turns...and ending in a satisfying denouement...A little mystery, a strange kind of romance, and a non-stop thriller. Daniel, a high school student, is just an average guy going into an average convenience store on a seemingly average day. His purpose, slightly more than average, is to gain access to some of the store owner's financial files. Daniel is a mystery shopper but today he is getting paid to be a spy for a man who wants to buy the property where the store is located. After Daniel discovers the documents he is looking for, he tries to sneak back out of the store without being caught by the store owner's daughter Rosie, who goes to Daniel's high school. Just when Daniel gets back out to the front of the store, the door opens and in walks a man wearing a mask and holding a gun. Time seems to stop in that moment and the lives of Daniel, Rosie, and the Masked Man are forever intertwined. All three want something, but will they all get what they want or die trying? McClintock does an excellent job capturing a reader's attention from the first page. This book, a part of the "Orca Soundings" series, is written from the alternating first-person-perspective of these three main characters. It is short and fast paced with every page full of suspense and intrigue. The characters are depicted honestly; their faults evident for all, which allows teenagers to relate to them better. Both teenage boys and girls will enjoy this book, though boys may find the quick action more appealing. The might be a useful tool to make reading more engaging for the less than eager reader. Topics of concern for parents and educators may be the use of swear words and issues concerning teenage pregnancy. Reviewer: Justina EngebretsonSchool Library Journal
Gr 8–11—McClintock tells the story of a convenience-store robbery through the eyes of the store owner and his daughter, Rosie; the mystery shopper, who is another teen from the neighborhood; the gunman, Leon, who is Rosie's ex-boyfriend; and Corey, Rosie's boyfriend. There is suspense to keep reluctant readers interested, and there is enough backstory to flesh out the characters, at least a bit. One nice surprise is the lack of foul language, even though an armed crime is taking place. Of course, secrets are revealed, and Leon's tale is particularly tragic. Unfortunately, Rosie garners no sympathy; she is a selfish girl who only dated Leon until Corey "came back" from cheating on her. She has lied and manipulated him and acts surprised at what he has done. Corey is despicable, with no redeeming qualities, at least in this story. This seems more like an introduction than a fleshed-out novel.—Robin Henry, Wakeland High School, Frisco, TXBook Details
