In retrospect, first books often seem like first casualties. In the case of Patricia Briggs' 1993 Masques, her own worst doubts about confirmed by its poor sales. Fortunately, Briggs continued to develop as a writer and as a plot-maker. Eventually, she decided to rescue the exciting romantic sorcerer fiction struggling to get out of its husk. This revised, smoothed version, which appears in a mass-market original, will please fans old and new. (P.S. Masques is the launch volume of a shiny new fantasy series.)
