Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Renate Sward, CNM, MS, MSN(University of Kentucky College of Nursing)Description: This maternity nursing review book is one in a series of five review books designed to highlight important information related to specific specialties. It is accompanied by a disk that contains questions formatted like NCLEX tests.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a study guide for students and clinicians preparing for examinations and clinical experiences in maternity nursing. The book facilitates the reader's ability to remember essential information, increase productivity of study time, identify knowledge base strengths and weaknesses, and improve testing skills through application of new behaviors.
Audience: Due to the scope of the book, the material is suitable for not only the student nurse but also the RN seeking further certification. Although this is the work of a first time author, the quality of the work clearly establishes her credibility.
Features: Chapters are logically organized starting with study outcomes, key terms, and then content review questions. Questions are accompanied by extensive rationale and analysis designed to enhance test taking skills. The table of contents is comprehensive and well organized. A chapter entitled "Essential Elements for Nursing" provides a strong review of the basics of nursing. Highlighted, in-depth tables set perpendicular to the other text provide clear synopsis of nursing diagnoses with interventions and evaluations as well as other material. One limitation is the exception test questions throughout the book that do not follow the new NCLEX standards.
Assessment: This maternity review book is an excellent tool for students and nurses preparing for testing and patient care. It is suitable for the beginning student and the RN seeking advanced certification. Logically organized, it presents review questions followed by exceptional analysis that increases test-taking skills. References are provided for specific areas. The disk is structurally formatted like the NCLEX but does include exception questions.
