Overview

"Youngsters are fascinated by magic, and the idea of making it happen in front of friends and family is appealing. These math "magic" exercises begin with the simple and progress to the complex, letting readers find their own levels. Many use a calculator, some require a deck of cards, others just need paper and pencil. There is plenty of material here to amuse and challenge....The directions are clear, and the problems work, so there is a guaranteed audience."β€”Booklist. 128 pages, 120 b/w illus., 5 3/8 X 8 1/4.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-- A collection of tricks and puzzles, loosely linked by mathematics, all of which can be found elsewhere. About half involve the use of a calculator; also included are those that use cards, coins, calendars, paper and paper clips, and other items to create amusing ways to fool people. The descriptions are straightforward, with examples and exceptions provided. All methods are explained well, with adequate white space around black-and-white illustrated concepts, as well as line drawings of anthropomorphized chickens, rabbits, and calculators to add humor. A couple of the activities do not have any obvious connection to the theme. (An argument can be made for one of them being an example of topology, but few fifth graders will know this.) There are absolutely no explanations as to why any of these tricks work--a surprising omission. Also, the author tells children to use calculators for even the simplest problems, such as adding one-digit numbers, or multiplying by ten. Although this is not an outstanding collection, it is a good additional purchase. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Public Library, CA
