Twenty stand-alone chapters illustrate the construction and analysis of mathematical models of diverse biological systems and processes. The author presumes no deep prior knowledge of biology, but insistes that "the mathematics is dictated by the biology and not vice-versa". His mathematical style is clear, marked almost invariably by just the right degree of detail. The emphasis is upon deterministic models (stochastic models are not treated). Population dynamics, biological oscillators and waves, pattern formation, epidemiology are among the topics treated. Beautifully produced, with many figures, exercises at the end of the chapters, a lengthy but by no means exhaustive bibliography. A joy to hold in one's hands, an inspiration to read, and an engaging browse even for aliens to the field. (NW) Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
