Synopsis

The purpose of this book is to provide teachers a framework for introducing an activity-centered approach to teaching mathematics. Although the lessons in each chapter are designed to make the transition from more traditional paper and pencil tasks to the use of manipulative materials as manageable as possible, no book could hope to anticipate all the questions that might arise from its use in the classroom. This book was written to provide teachers support and encouragement as they alter their presentation of mathematics to their students. The ideas set forth in each chapter may prove sufficient for some teachers.
