Gr 4-7-- A collection of 12 tricks, most of which require the ability to add, subtract, divide, multiply, and use a calculator to perform them successfully. Kallen begins with the simple trick of counting fingers backward, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and adding the 5 on the other hand to make 11 fingers, and then works toward multiplying 3-digit numbers by 3-digit numbers by the use of the 9 complement (spelled ``compliment'' throughout). Some of the activities are commonly found in collections of tricks and games and some are more math than magic. All are clearly explained, easy to follow, and can be used by kids or teachers having fun with bonus points or end-of-class fillers. Large, lackluster cartoons break up the text, but do little to enhance it. --Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NYBook Details
