With a few seemingly simple lines on paper, or lumps of clay, Matisse was able to portray the human figure with an immediacy, purity, and expressiveness that characterized his continual investigation of this image. These works are an integral part of the artist's entire body of work as well as a substantial oeuvre on their own: two lines of study that are explored in this abridged English version of the catalog of the Saarbrucken exhibition (May-June 1991). This is a fine addition to the study of the less familiar works, with a biography, extensively interspersed with the artist's own words, splendid, well-annotated illustrations, and an excellent bibliography. A delight for the eye and a stimulus for the mind.-- Paula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New YorkBook Details
