Gr 6-9-This biography focuses on the writer's early life and chronicles her childhood, family influences, single motherhood, jobs, marriages, travels, and personal struggles. The book is based heavily on the poet/author's own writings and interviews; referenced quotes and sidebars paint an inspirational picture of a woman who has succeeded in so many areas. However, her phenomenal rise to fame in the `70s, `80s, and `90s is only touched upon in the final chapter. Numerous black-and-white photographs of Angelou as an adult as well as of people and places that influenced her are scattered throughout.
