The new series, Research Guides to Ancient Civilizations, is designed to introduce general readers, students, and nonspecialists to the study of particular ancient civilizations. Each volume is devoted to a specific archaeological culture or culture region, and seeks to provide an appreciation of its achievements through a critical assessment of the literature. The present volume is a general introduction to the study of Maya civilization of southern Mexico and northern Central America. The first section in an introduction to ancient Maya civilization with an emphasis upon the Classic Period (ca. AD 300-900).
