The new series, Research Guides to Ancient Civilizations, is designed to introduce general readers, students, and nonspecialists to the study of particular ancient civilizations. Each volume is devoted to a specific archaeological culture or culture region, and seeks to provide an appreciation of its achievements through a critical assessment of the literature. The present volume is a general introduction to the study of Maya civilization of southern Mexico and northern Central America.
