Overview

This powerful drama is based on actual events surrounding the tragic shooting of an unarmed young black woman by a white policeman in 1979 in Birmingham, Alabama. The resulting tensions threatened the progress made since the turbulent civil rights protests and violence of the 1960s, gains made possible in part by a progressive white mayor represented here by the title character Evan Todd. Now, in the aftermath of the police shooting, the mayor fins himself in conflict with his friend and colleague, a black leader who challenges the mayor's moral authority and political base. Ultimately, Major Toddshows how political conflict is not necessarily a matter of right versus wrong, but can result from passionate disagreement among people of honor.
