Children's Literature
There are lots of things to measure, and this book looks at forty ways to do that. It is important to understand not only the system we use for measurement, commonly known as the English measurement system, but the metric system as well. The English system was originally based on parts of the body, for example a foot. A yard was the measurement from the shoulder to the thumb, and a mile was how far a Roman soldier could walk in 1,000 paces. The French developed the metric system in the 1790s. It is based on units of 10. The first seventeen exercises use English and metric units to measure length and distance. There are nine more activities measuring volume. Exercises in weight, temperature and time complete the forty problems. Get out your running shoes, because you will be running a mile and calculating how fast you ran in miles per hour. Dancing decimal points is a card and dice game for converting from one metric unit to another. 2001, John Wiley and Sons, $12.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
