Editorials

From the Publisher

"As someone who has used this book in the past, I know it is excellent for teaching medical students. It also is reasonably priced for students who are dealing with the high cost of medical education. The most valuable features are the excellent pictures and figures that enhance the understanding of complex issues. Each chapter is followed by a few thought-provoking questions that can be used during teaching to encourage deeper understanding of the material.

Although written for medical students in the first years of training, the book also is very useful for students in advanced training such as residency or fellowships." - Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center), from Doody's Reviews

From The Critics

Reviewer: Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is the sixth edition of a popular microbiology textbook for medical students first published almost 20 years ago, in 1990. With the rapid changes that occur in infectious agents, this new edition is necessary to update the 2005 edition.
Purpose: The primary goal is to provide a comprehensive textbook for medical students on infectious agents that cause disease in humans. This is clearly very important as new physicians are trained in the importance of diseases caused by microorganisms. This is one of the better textbooks to use for teaching medical students.
Audience: Although written for medical students in the first years of training, the book also is very useful for students in advanced training such as residency or fellowships. The authors who have compiled and organized this book are all experienced teachers and excellent medical diagnosticians.
Features: The textbook is organized in a traditional manner, beginning with some fundamentals on the classification and lifestyles of infectious agents. This is followed by chapters on the host immune responses and how a laboratory diagnosis is made. This prepares readers for the meat of the book, which contains details on specific microbial pathogens. The most valuable features are the excellent pictures and figures that enhance the understanding of complex issues. The short clinical cases that are scattered throughout allow for the practical application of the information presented in the book. Each chapter is followed by a few thought-provoking questions that can be used during teaching to encourage deeper understanding of the material. Also adding value to the book is the online material that includes practice questions so students can test their comprehension.
Assessment: As someone who has used this book in the past, I know it is excellent for teaching medical students. It also is reasonably priced for students who are dealing with the high cost of medical education

This is an outstanding first text for a course on medical microbiology. In addition to various well-organized chapters on bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens, the authors have included an excellent section on basic principles of medical microbiology. The last edition of this text was published in 1990. The book has been written as a introductory level text covering the epidemiology, clinical syndrome, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment of a broad range of microbial pathogens responsible for causing clinical disease. The primary audience for this text includes medical students, medical technology students, and upper-level undergraduate microbiology students interested in the field of medical microbiology. The book has several outstanding features. Each chapter has many excellent figures and tables, enhancing the overall instructional value of the text. Within each chapter, the authors have also carefully highlighted key words or phrases. This facilitates the student's e fforts to sort out the important facts or concepts associated with the various microbial pathogens. In addition, at the end of each chapter is a list of sentinel/recent literature citations that the student can use for further study. The text has only one minor shortcoming and that is a superficial coverage of the opportunistic mycoses. Yeast infections have emerged as a major problem in the critical care populations and I am sure that the authors will rectify this omission in future editions. The authors of medical microbiology in this third edition have again successfully developed a first-rate text covering the broad discipline of medical microbiology. Each chapter is well organized, containingnumerous figures and tables. The authors are themselves outstanding educator-scientists and their collective experiences have been combined to produce an outstanding teaching text.
