The overall focus of this book is on medical-surgical problems, complementary therapies, managed care, and community based care.
Purpose: The purpose is to present medical-surgical nursing content to prepare nurses and to be used by practicing nurses and instructors. The authors and contributors meet the goals of the book.
Audience: The book is written for students of nursing, practicing nurses, and other healthcare providers. The authors are experts in the field and have written four previous editions. Ignatavicius and Workman employed specialists in the different fields of nursing and had the content reviewed by other nurse experts.
Features: The book focuses on critical thinking to prepare students to function as an interdisciplinary team member in acute care and community based settings. The emphasis is also on assisting students with NCLEX readiness, with NCLEX questions at the end of each chapter and on the accompanying CD. Students have access to the EVOLVE website where there are core based critical thinking challenges and pharmacology review questions. The book has an average reading level of 10th to 11th grade with some chapters above and below that level.
Assessment: This edition is well written and continues to demonstrate the high quality that the nursing profession has expected. I recommend the use of this book in medical-surgical nursing programs.
