Purpose: This well-illustrated U.K. book covers the basic aspects of medicine that would be encountered in the everyday primary care setting. As it is a summary rather than a comprehensive reference, it is focused on obtaining the history, performing a physical examination, and working through to a diagnosis.
Audience: Medical students are the intended audience. The intuitive illustrations are tremendously helpful for explaining a diagnosis to a patient.
Features: The book is divided into organ systems and then into symptoms. This format makes it easy to quickly find relevant information. The first chapter assumes little, starting with how to be a medical student, patient confidentiality, consent, and the relationship with a patient. A companion book, Medicine at a Glance: Core Cases, by the same author, is available in print and online.
Assessment: This is a well-formatted, easy-to-use presentation of basic topics in medicine.
