Children's Literature

The Chicago Cubs are a storied franchise and young baseball fans can use the basic information presented in this book to appreciate their first game. While introducing Wrigley Field, the Cubs' uniforms, and the unusual pennant-less streak, the book also presents greats of Cubs baseball like Ernie Banks and Ryne Sandberg. The stars that young fans are accustomed to seeing are included, but they take a less prominent role in the book. The lighter side of baseball is also shown. There is a seek-and-find activity, followed by a limerick about former Cubs player Ron Santo. Readers may even be inspired to try a baseball-themed limerick of their own. The set-up of the text feels a little strange, but readers will get vital information and see some eye-catching pictures from this volume. Libraries looking for simpler reading matter for the youngest baseball fans should consider adding this book from the "Smart about Sports" series. Reviewer: Tiffany Erickson
