Overview

This is the remarkable life story of Meini Dunlevy. Born in Massachusetts of Kerry parents, she was reared in her grandparents house in Dunquin, County Kerry. From its harbor, boats would set off for the Blasket Islands, a remote community that remained Gaelic-speaking until the evacuation of the last inhabitants in 1953. When she was nineteen, Meini eloped with an island widower to the Great Blasket and worked there as a nurse and midwife for thirty-six years. She returned widowed to Dunquin and died in 1967, aged 91. Meini's story stands alongside Blasket Island classics such as Twenty Years a-Growing.
