Synopsis
Forty-one essays are collected in this reader designed for courses in the sociology or psychology of gender, masculinity, or men's studies, or as a book about men in a more women-focused gender course. Essays examine the roles and relationships in men's lives and factors shaping men's experiences in those roles and relationships. Essays on the American male make up the bulk, but articles on men from Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the Pacific are also included. Men's lives are variously seen as products of gender socialization, as diversified by culture-class-race- sexuality, as differentiated from women's lives, and as a mixture of privilege and problems. While there is no index, essays are organized according to thematic subheadings like Men as Friends, Men in Families, Men and Employment, Men in Trouble. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
