School Library Journal

Gr 8-12-- A general overview that discusses causes and prevention, education and services available, and research for the future. Although Dunbar discusses '60s legislation guaranteeing the rights of people with mental retardation, there is no mention of President Kennedy's personal interest in the subject or any discussion of the Special Olympics. There is a chapter on education but the effect of Public Law 94-142 is not fully explored, and it is not clearly explained that some children do better in more restricted environments than the public school. Readers can also become easily confused about the difference between learning disabilities and retardation. Minimal information is provided on vocational education and training that allow individuals to live as independently as possible. The black-and-white photographs are fuzzy and add little to the text. The book does have a useful introduction for students doing research; it dispels many myths regarding the causes of retardation. --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
