Overview
At last here's a simplified version of the ACSM metabolic equations and an easier way to solve them. Drs. Swain and Leutholtz provide straightforward formulas for figuring the caloric expenditure, or oxygen consumption during walking, running, stationary cycling, and bench stepping. This handy reference also shows how to apply the equations to other pieces of exercise equipment, calculate heart rate prescriptions, and estimate maximal oxygen consumption from exercise tests. In addition to simplifying difficult math problems without sacrificing the underlying content of the equations or the accuracy of their answers, the authors reinforce their formulas with many sample problems and case studies. The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Thomas A. Trojian, MD(University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine)Description: The authors of this workbook make exercise prescription calculations simple, using real life problems. They convert VO2 calculations to workable equations that you will use every time you write an exercise prescription.
Purpose: The intent is to simplify the metabolic equations in the "ACSM's Guideline for Exercise Testing and Prescription," making them easier to use for fitness professionals. Their conversion to MPH is very helpful. The new equations are approximations that are valid in the clinical setting. After finishing the book, the equations will easily roll off your tongue.
Audience: The authors intended the book for exercise science students and fitness professionals. It is a workbook that any person who wants to write exercise prescriptions should have, from the personal trainer to the physician. The authors are experienced in the use and teaching of metabolic calculations.
Features: The workbook is well annotated. Tables and equations are distributed throughout. The equations are uncluttered in a contrasting color that makes reading them simple. The authors have referenced their work with pertinent and current articles. The appendix section supplies how the equations are derived and more sample problems. The workbook is well designed and easy to use for the mathematically challenged or the guru.
Assessment: This is a useful book. If you already consider ACSM's metabolic equations easy, then move right along to another text. If you are mathematically challenged, the book will take a little longer to work through, but when you are done, you will be able to use these equations with little or no trouble. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to write exercise prescriptions that your clients (patients) can use. At $15.00, the book is well worth purchasing.
