Overview

The book presents a new method of mathematical modelling of dynamics of complex environmental systems and ecological processes using time series observations and prior knowledge or information. An Operator of transition which is called "response function" allows one to capture and describe as much as possible of cause-effect relationships existing in the environmental system.

The main idea is the essential generalisation of the response functions method and its application to the development of mathematical models of the complex environment systems.

An alternative approach to modelling of such environmental systems is the integrated modelling approach that means capturing as much as possible of cause-effect relationships and describing them with an operator of transition, or "input-output" function. In this study the authors propose the method of response functions as a method of the construction of purposeful, credible integrated models from data and prior knowledge or information.

The following models are developed for the demonstration of the potentialities of the proposed method: ONTOMOD - the models of ontogenesis in higher plants, POLMOD.RAD - the model of radionuclides ynamics in the elementary ecosystems (using 90Sr as an example), POLMOD.PEST - the model of pesticides dynamics in the elementary ecosystems, HUMOD - the model of soil organic matter dynamics in the natural and land-used ecosystems.

Diskettes with demonstration version of the developed models are included.
