Children's Literature

This book has the standard shape recognition expected of a learn-one's-shapes book. Montague-Smith introduces readers to circles, squares, diamonds, rectangles and others and then prompts them to recognize the abstract shapes in common objects like a pizza slice. After such simple exercises, readers move on to identifying shapes within shapes, for example, the circular pepperoni on the triangular pizza slice. The author then pushes readers to complete geometric sequences, and in this way learn about patterns. Other challenges include finding geometric shapes within real-world items through open-ended prompts. Such prompts stimulate the reader to look for shapes in her everyday surroundings, and expand the book's activities to her daily life. Stanley illustrates these exercises in bright, solid colors and outlines the shapes with thick black line. 2003, Kingfisher Publications, Ages 2 to 6.
