Children's Literature

Mia Hamm's life and career as a soccer player is explored in this installment from the "Discover the Life of a Sports Star" series. After an introduction complete with general statistics, the book delves into Mia's early childhood and soccer career. After Mia joined the U.S. National Team as the youngest woman ever to play for the team, she played soccer for UNC and helped the college win four NCAA national championships. Mia's participation in the U.S. World Cup Soccer team and the U.S. Olympic team is then described. The Mia Hamm Foundation and other things Mia does that make her a role model are explained. A timeline of Mia's life, a glossary, and numerous color photographs accentuate this biography of the athlete. This book is an excellent recommendation for children interested in soccer or strong modern female figures. 2004, Rourke, Ages 8 up.

Library Journal

Gr 2-4-These easy-to-read biographies provide brief, straightforward information about star athletes. On each spread, one or two short paragraphs of large-print text are balanced with a full-page, full-color photograph. Each offering presents a few facts about its subject's childhood and covers career highlights. Unfamiliar words appear in bold and are later defined in a glossary. Unfortunately, the titles take readers only through the 2001 or 2002 season. More in-depth books about these individuals are available. Purchase these new titles where sports biographies are in high demand.-Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
