Publishers Weekly

Drawing inspiration from Carroll’s own photography, Foreman brings fresh enthusiasm to an already wondrous tale. Unlike many depictions, his Alice is “dark-haired and elfin-featured” (per the illustrator’s note) as the living Alice Liddell appeared in Carroll’s photographs. In spot art and full-bleed scenes, Foreman’s paintings appear on most pages, bursting with color and energy. White rabbits, mock turtles, and execution-minded queens look prepared to leap off the page. Also available: Aesop’s Fables. Ages 9-12. (Sept.)

About the Author, Lewis Carroll

It's possible that if Lewis Carroll had never met Alice Liddell, he might have enjoyed a more peaceful lifetime and an obscure legacy. But his whimsical inventiveness touched everything he did, and a story he made up one afternoon for a little girl became one of literature's great classics, Alice in Wonderland.

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey

Inspired illustrations breathe new life into this classic tale. Foreman's fresh approach is based on the photography of Lewis Carroll and he uses Alice Liddell, her father and even Carroll himself as models for his characters. His Alice is a dark-haired beauty with a mischievous grin much like the young girl who influenced the tale. Every page is awash in stunning watercolors that capture the energy and wit of many of the scenes familiar to children. All the recognizable characters are there including the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and a perfectly loveable Mouse but each is given a new look. A note from the illustrator and photos of Alice and Carroll and a facsimile taken from an early edition are bonus additions. With its oversize format and large font combined with illustrations on every page this would make a fine read aloud to add to every family's library. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
