Synopsis

Discusses the life, works, and lasting influence of Michelangelo.

Beverley Fahey - Children's Literature

Part of the "Masterpieces: Artists and Their Works" series, this slim volume (only 24 pages) highlights the life of Michelangelo through a chronicle of his significant works. Beginning with an early bas- relief "Madonna of the Stairs," the author progresses through the "Pieta," to Michelangelo's work in Florence, namely the statue of "David," to his six-year odyssey painting the Sistine Chapel, and to his final seventeen years working on St. Peter's Basilica. The text is a mixture of salient facts about Michelangelo, his technique with brush and marble, and comments concerning the political climate of the times. Large color photographs and a clear, uncluttered format make this very accessible and inviting. As a supplement to other biographies such as Diane Stanley's Michelangelo this book will appeal to young readers. 2002, Capstone Press,
