Overview

The fact that infectious diseases claim over 17 million victims worldwide each year, along with the regular emergence of new drug resistance pathogens, signals that infectious diseases will continue to be a daily concern of the Physician well into the future. This reality requires that today's medical students develop a solid foundation in medical microbiology -- a foundation they can achieved by using IMS: Microbial Pathogenesis.

This book is developed in response to the changing field of medical microbiology. The number of diseases and the diversity of microbial pathogens that cause these diseases are far too many for simple taxonomic organization. As a result, IMS Microbial Pathogenesis focuses on the common principles of infection rather than the old taxonomic organization, enabling a better long term retention of relevant material, and minimizing the short-term memorization of specific "factoids," many of which may become out-dated in a short time.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Description: This concise and well organized text has been conceived as a problem-oriented approach for teaching host-parasite interactions to medical students and other allied health professions.
Purpose: It has been designed as a supplemental resource to a traditional course in medical microbiology or microbial pathogenesis. The insertion of a clinical scenario within each chapter is provided in an effort to fully integrate the basic concepts of microbial pathogenesis with a need for clinical relevance for medical students preparing to take the board examination.
Audience: This text has a broad audience that includes medical students and other allied health students taking their first course in medical microbiology.
Features: It is well organized; seven basic areas are covered, including: specific microbial pathogens; dissemination and colonization; immune evasion strategies; microbial pathogenecity; genetics of virulence; host response to infection; and vaccine development. In each chapter a clinical scenario is introduced that is integrated into the body of the text and is fully resolved by the end of the chapter. This is a valuable teaching aid since it provides a clinical relevance for the principles presented within each chapter. The text is also well illustrated, containing numerous tables, figures, and charts. In addition, each chapter ends with a series of thoughtful study questions encompassing the pertinent subject matter.
Assessment: This text is an excellent resource for any student studying medical microbiology or microbial pathogenesis. By using a case oriented approach, the editors have carefully integrated the basic concepts of microbial pathogenesis within a framework that has broad clinical relevance to future clinical practitioners. I would enthusiastically recommend this text to any student wishing to obtain a fundamental understanding of microbial pathogenesis and host response.
