Overview

Continuing development and testing of propositions and formulations from nursing theory are critical for the continued evolution of nursing science. In this text, the editors and contributors highlight significant work in middle range theory development using King's Conceptual System and Theory of Goal Attainment.

Explored in the three sections of this volume are:

  • An overview of the foundations on which middle range theories are built from within King's Conceptual System, including a chapter by Dr. King

  • Presentation of a variety of middle range theories applied to individuals, groups and families, and organizations--from children to the elderly

  • Examination of post-middle range theory development and challenges for further nursing research and education

Each chapter has a consistent format and includes a wide-range of perspectives and geographical locations, allowing readers to compare knowledge-building efforts across international lines.

About the Author, Christina L. Sieloff

Christina Leibold Sieloff, PhD, RN, CAN, BC, is Associate Professor at Montana State University, College of Nursing, on the Billings Campus, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate nursing courses with an emphasis on nursing theory and management. Dr. Sieloff received her BSN from Wayne State University; her MSN with a major in Nursing Administration and a minor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing; and PhD in Nursing with a cognate in Management. Dr. Sieloff's past honors have included the Faculty Research Award from Oakland University in 1994, the first person in the School of Nursing to receive this award; Faculty Recognition award in 1996; early awarding of tenure in 2000, again the first person in the School of Nursing to accomplish this; and Featured Faculty Recognition by the Board of Trustees in 2003. Dr. Sieloff has authored or collaborated with others on nineteen publications and seventeen presentations related to her theoretical studies. Her primary program of research focuses on the testing of her middle range theory, Theory of Group Power within Organizations, and the related instrument, the Sieloff-King Assessment of Group Power within Organizations. Her most recent research involved the development of the Collaborative Research Group of nursing faculty. The first research project from this group is a pilot study examining the relationship of nursing group power to the attainment of positive patient outcomes.

Dr. Sieloff is a member of the American Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau, International and has been active in a variety of positions, including serving on the ANA Board ofDirectors.

Maureen A. Frey, PhD, RN, is a Research Associate at Wayne State University, School of Medicine, and is coordinator of the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Research Network. Dr. Frey received her MSN and doctorate (PhD in nursing) from Wayne State University. She is a pioneer in developing and testing middle range theory derived from King's conceptual system. Her theoretical formulation of families, children, chronic conditions, and health outcomes has been tested with youth with diabetes, asthma, and HIV/AIDS. Her focus is on understanding interactions that influence behavior and the relationship between behavioral change and improved health status. Dr. Frey is a strong advocate for the utility of King's conceptual system outside of nursing and currently works with a multidisciplinary team. She has implemented theory-based research in both academic and service settings.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:This book presents the "state of the science" based on King's work, providing an overview of how select middle range theories applied to individuals, groups and families, and organizations are built on King's work. Chapters represent a wide range of perspectives and geographic locations.
Purpose:The purpose is to highlight significant work that extends King's conceptual system and her theory of goal attainment. It focuses mainly on middle range theories, but other seminal works are included.
Audience:The audience includes students at the master's and doctoral level as well as practicing nurses who want to test or develop theory in their practice.
Features:The 18 chapters are divided into three parts. Part I discusses the foundations of King's work and how theories build on that work; part II presents several middle range theories derived from King's work; and part III looks at post-middle range theory development.
Assessment:This book looks at theory development in a unique way. Any scholar who has used or has been interested in King's Theory of Goal Attainment would benefit from reading how numerous middle-range theories were based on King's conceptual system. It provides a fresh look at the development and testing of nursing knowledge and includes new middle-range theories from refereed publications as well as master's theses and doctoral dissertations. It is a very interesting but rigorous read.
