Overview
Parents who recognize a special alertness in their child—or a precocious knack for problem solving or verbal expression—are bound to wonder if their little boy or girl is specially gifted. If so, what should they, the parents, do to further their child's development. This book presents more than 100 challenging puzzles and games designed to test and stretch kids' intellects and imaginations. It also offers insights to help parents assess and guide their child's intellectual growth. The author, who is CEO of the Mensa Foundation for Gifted Children, helps moms and dads determine their child's special aptitudes, whether in math, creative thinking, or some other area. Mind Workout for Gifted Kids consists of three parts: Part One discusses today's changing ideas about giftedness, describing the old IQ tests as being too narrow in scope. It points out recently discovered and wider-ranging ways to recognize a child's potential talents. Part Two presents the book's tests, with advice on how parents can best introduce each test to their child. The tests cover verbal skills, verbal critical reasoning, numerical skills, numerical critical reasoning, spatial reasoning, visual reasoning, logic, lateral thinking, creativity, and imagination. The book's third and final part offers special advice to parents of what the author calls TAG—or Talented and Gifted kids. It suggests techniques for improving memory, concentration, and visualization skills. Parents will also find details on useful contacts, instructive books, and informative web sites, all of which focus on gifted kids.
