Overview
Minimally invasive medicine has the goal of providing health care with minimal trauma. When minimally invasive surgery is utilized, it reduces the length of hospital stays, lowers costs, lowers pain, and reduces blood loss. Other minimally invasive techniques minimize radiation exposure, tissue damage, and drug side effects.
Collecting contributions from workers in various fields within the sphere of minimally invasive medical technology, this book provides essential information for those involved with researching, designing, and using minimally invasive devices and systems. It emphasizes the technology required to accomplish minimally invasive medicine. The book will be of interest to biomedical engineers, medical physicists, and health care providers who want to know the technical workings of their devices and instruments.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Jay R. Goldberg, PhD(Marquette University)Description: This book provides a thorough presentation of the technologies and procedures used in minimally invasive medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive description of the technologies and medical procedures used to provide healthcare with minimal trauma to the patient. The goals of minimally invasive medicine are to reduce trauma, pain, length of hospital stays, costs, and complications and side effects. This book is needed to inform medical device designers and practitioners of the newer, safer, less traumatic technologies available in their armamentarium and to stimulate further development of these and newer technologies and procedures. This book meets the author's objectives.
Audience: The book is written for biomedical engineers, medical physicists, and healthcare providers who are interested in understanding the technologies associated with the devices, instruments, and procedures used in medicine. It is useful to both medical device designers and practitioners. The editor is a credible authority on the subject, but I am not aware of the qualifications of the contributing authors.
Features: The book presents the technologies and procedures used for minimally invasive sensing, measurement, and recording of various physiological parameters (chemical, physical, and biological) and signals. It describes various imaging methods and presents minimally invasive surgical procedures and their associated devices and instruments. It includes a description of computer and robotic applications as well as technologies for drug delivery and neuromuscular stimulation. The authors provide many examples of how the technologies and procedures are used in medicine. In addition to describing the various technologies, the authors provide the interested reader with knowledge of the physical principles and mathematics that explain how and why these technologies work. Many helpful illustrations, formulae (chemical and mathematical), graphs, and images are presented.
Assessment: "This book does an excellent job of presenting the technologies used in minimally invasive medicine. The examples are fairly comprehensive. The authors provide information useful to technical and nontechnical readers. "
Booknews
Futuristic-sounding minimally invasive surgical robotics and virtual reality are being currently applied in medicine. Eighteen contributed chapters showcase the technology used in these and other newer minimally invasive techniques such as chemical sensors, neuro- electric signal recording, X-ray-based imaging, nuclear medicine, biomagnetic and bioelectric imaging, ultrasound, multimodal imaging, endoscopic surgery, laser ablation, neuromuscular stimulation, helical tomography, and noninvasive drug delivery. Chapters include graphics and problems. This volume is part of the official book series of the International Organization for Medical Physics and the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering. Webster is in the department of biomedical engineering at the U. of Wisconsin, Madison. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)3 Stars from Doody
