From The Critics

Reviewer: Lavonne M. Adams, PhD, RN, CCRN(Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This book focuses on the types of problems most commonly seen by nurse practitioners who work with individuals experiencing minor injuries. It also addresses areas related to minor injuries in which nurse practitioners are most likely to lack knowledge from previous education or experience.
Purpose: The purpose is to make a "contribution to the process of developing education for nurse practitioners by nurse practitioners." The book meets this worthy objective.
Audience: Nurse practitioners, nurses who work in the emergency or occupational health settings, and nursing students are the audience. The author is a nurse practitioner in Scotland, and has effectively honed his experience in the treatment of minor injuries.
Features: The book addresses the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal trauma, minor wounds, minor burns, and other minor injuries. Black-and-white photos and print drawings illustrate various anatomical features, assessment techniques, and injuries. The print drawings are of high quality. The greatest shortcoming of the book is the age of the references; they tend to be greater than five years old, although the author acknowledges that the book does not add any new clinical knowledge.
Assessment: The book is well-organized and easy to read. It would be a useful reference for nurses and nursing students working in a setting in which they encounter minor trauma.
