Library Journal

This anthology presents authors not generally known for their nature writing. Among the essays is Rudyard Kipling's description of a trip through Yellowstone; Charles Dickens's report from Lowell, Massachusetts; and Mark Twain's account of Hawaiian volcanoes. Harriet Moore, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Waldo Emerson contribute poetry. Other authors include Thomas Wolfe, Wallace Stegner, Henry James, and Bernard De Voto. Many of the essays were written years before the areas described were designated as national parks. The choice of authors sets this book apart from other anthologies, such as the recent This Incomperable Lande ( LJ 4/1/89). Libraries with active natural history collections will want to add this one.-- Randy Dykhuis, OCLC, Dublin, Ohio Reviewers wanted for reference and pop ular books in medicine, science, and tech nology. Hot topics: childcare, aging, envi ronmentalism, radiation, popular use of microcomputers, and more.
