Overview
Since its introduction in 1940 and revision in the 1980s, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is one of the most widely used psychopathology assessment instruments. Butcher (emeritus, psychology, U. of Minnesota) introduces this text/reference of 19 chapters intended to aid graduate student and practitioners in MMPI-2 test interpretation. Contributors treat general issues; case studies of diverse applications (e.g., evaluation of disability, with Hispanic clients); the research base; and new scales. The chapter on malingering treats the key issue of validity. Sources for MMPI translations into other languages conclude the volume. Annotation Β© 2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, ORSynopsis

Description:This is a professional's guide to the MMPI-2, the most widely used and researched personality assessment tool. It focuses on advanced interpretive analyses using relevant research and applied strategies.
Purpose:According to the editor, the book "was developed to provide clinicians and graduate students in applied psychology with an advanced interpretive textbook that incorporates useful research and applied strategies to aid in test interpretation." (p. xii) Dr. Butcher later adds: "The overall plan for this book is to provide the reader with a panoramic view of MMPI-2-based assessment strategies and to cover a broad range of applications and settings." (p. 4) The book meets the editor's objectives.
Audience:The target audience is described as geared for clinicians and graduate students, addresses both research and clinical applications of the MMPI-2. As a member of the committee which revised the MMPI in 1989, the author is an extremely credible authority in the subject matter. He was formerly the editor of Psychological Assessment has published more than 50 books and 175 articles. The contributors are a virtual who's who in MMPI-2 research including Roger Greene, Edwin Megargee, and John Graham.
Features:The book is organized into four parts: perspectives; applications in assessment and therapy; applications across diverse populations; and special considerations. The chapters all include a survey of relevant research; summary of interpretation nuances; highlighted features; and case studies. This book introduces some of the newer scales (RC scales, PSY-5 scales) and discusses use of the MMPI-2 in diagnosing and assessing personality disorders and PTSD. The contributors also talk about using the MMPI-2 in inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, correctional settings, and medical settings. The last part addresses cross-cultural applications. The case studies are well written and elucidate the concepts wonderfully.
Assessment:This is the book to have if you want an advanced knowledge of the MMPI-2. It is written by the "movers and shakers" of MMPI research and addresses many important areas. Clinicians use this test so often that it behooves them to have extensive knowledge of it. This book will deliver the goods.
