Overview

Modern Britain since 1906 examines a time when British life experienced some of its most momentous and farreaching changes. The twentieth century has seen several important phases of political realignment: the rise of Labour and the decline of the Liberals, an age of Conservative dominance and the failure of minority parties. Britain has also seen unprecedented social and economic change, with the impact of two world wars and the inter-war slump, poverty and growth, the creation and expansion of the Welfare State as well as the often parlous industrial relations seen during a long period of manufacturing decline. British cultural life has also been profoundly affected by the women's movement and by increasing ethnic diversity and the problems of racial conflict.

This reader brings together a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including parliamentary records, public speeches, official papers, press reports, memoirs and classic and leading works of history and politics. The introductions provide an invaluable guide to students to the use of the sources and summarise the main themes of the period.
