Overview
While dinosaurs ruled the land, what kinds of animals were living in the depths of the sea? Turns out there were some creatures far stranger than your average dinosaur, swimming and skulking around on the ocean floor. The Loch Ness Monster can't even compare!Editorials
Children's Literature
Dinosaurs—those that walked the earth—have intrigued children for decades. But what about the dinosaurs/prehistoric reptiles that roamed the seas? This book, part of the "When Dinosaurs Lived" series, offers an overview of these animals to young readers. With Bindon's colorful illustrations, these "monsters" include the commonly known Ichthyosaur, alligator-like Geosaurus, long-necked, Nessie—like Elasmosaurus, Archelon, a giant sea turtle, and more. Each double page spread includes "Sea Monster Facts" including name meaning, group, time, place, size, diet, and year named. Plus, a boxed aside, "Dino Don Says," contains extra information and comical comments. The back of the cook includes a tale of one of the first fossil finds by a young English girl 200 years ago, a time line and discussion of "Modern Monsters," such as the giant oarfish (real), the Loch Ness and Lake Champlain monsters (legend). I would classify this as a dinosaur book with a bad attitude—why, except for marketing, call these creatures monsters? Most attractive to young readers is the fold-out seascape with dinosaur stickers. This is an interesting—if simple—overview, which may well wet the appetites of young readers. It lends itself to classroom setting to inspire further study or science-related art projects. 2002, Grosset & Dunlap, Ages 8 to 12.—Judy Crowder
