Overview

In an ancient empty sky Moon's only company are the jealous grizzly bear clouds who chew away at him, and he yearns for a friend. Moon descends to the earth and finds a kindred spirit in Otter, but Otter cannot leave his family to accompany Moon back to the sky. Otter suggests another plan, telling Moon that 'there are ten pretty little green frogs and one ugly little green frog who are looking for husbands.'

With the help of friend Otter, Moon finds a bride in Little Ugly Green Frog, who lacks physical beauty but possesses a special gift.

Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan

This picture book adaptation of a Modoc legend tells how the lonely moon makes friends with otter, who then helps him find a wife among the frog maidens. In a tale reminiscent of The Rough-Face Girl, the moon comes to love the Little Green Ugly Frog in spite of her appearance and the scorn of her sisters. The legend falls into the category of pourquoi tales, and in this case it explains why the moon seems to change. Unusual, watercolor illustrations in cool, nighttime hues portray the moon and animals as Modoc Indians wearing traditional masks and dress. A note provides more information on the legend.
