In reflective, often passionate prose, an ``emigre from within,'' a former priest who became a writer, explores his attempt to break free of ``the language of the tribe'' and the ecclesiastical constraints of his youth to encounter a ``disconcerting'' Jesus who calls followers into spiritual deserts and radically rejects all convention. Shunning systems, abstractions, and dualism, Sulivan does, nonetheless, grant that some need secure faith structures and affirms the value of a church that, like Peter, is faithful, loving, and betraying at the same time.
