Overview
Motor Control: Concepts and Issues D.R. Humphrey H.-J. Freund Editors Studies of the neural control of movement and posture have come to be truly interdisciplinary in scope. Major contributions have come to this still growing field of research from many branches of neuroscience, clinical neurology, psychology, and the emerging disciplines of biomechanics and robotics. As a result of this multidisciplinary effort, much progress has been made in understanding the attributes of motor behavior, the functional organization of motor control regions of the brain, the nature of commands for movement which emanate from these areas, and the manner in which these neural commands are processed subcortically to compensate for the mechanical properties of muscles and their attachments. This volume summarizes the deliberations of over forty outstanding researchers in the field of motor control—representing several of its constituent disciplines. It provides an up-to-date sampling of research in selected areas, perspectives on current issues and unresolved questions, and suggestions for future research. It is, therefore, a valuable reference not only for researchers in motor control, but for all scientists who are interested in how the brain programs and guides goal-directed behavior.Editorials

The four workshop groups address the general problem of defining the fundamental units of motor behavior and their mechanisms of control; the role of sensory input in organizing movements and how movement, in turn, shapes dynamic patterns of sensory inflow; the general question of how studies of a particular motor act might speed discovery of the general mechanisms by which the nervous system organizes goal-directed behavior; and recent evidence which indicates that each cerebral hemisphere contains many arm-hand motor areas, and the possibility that voluntary movements of the arm and hand may be controlled by different combinations of these areas, depending upon the patterns of motivational and sensory input to motor structures.
